Chinese medicine has developed its own system of diagnosis and treatment which is based on the observation of signs and symptoms and conclusions drawn from those. When it comes to women’s health, Western medicine places great emphasis on results from blood and hormone tests, ultrasounds or laparoscopies. Chinese medicine focuses more on signs and symptoms and issues associated with the menstrual cycle.
A “Chinese Gynaecological diagnosis”
A Chinese medical gynaecological diagnosis will be concerned with the presentation of the period (or history thereof for older women) and combine this information with the findings of a standard Chinese medicine diagnosis. In Chinese Gynaecology we ask questions about the amount of bleeding, the consistency (blood clots are not considered normal), the regularity of the cycle and the colour of the menstrual blood, as well as presence of pain and other issues (pre-menstrual problems, abnormal discharge). In older women we will ask about the period history, the cessation of bleeding and the current presenting symptoms. We will also take the findings of Western medical tests and procedures into account.

In Chinese medicine painful periods and abdominal pain are considered to be the result of slowing down and stagnation of blood flow in the pelvis. Chinese medicine holds that blood flow can become sluggish for a number of reasons. One is considered to be cold accumulation in the lower abdomen which may be the result of cold exposure or consumption of cold natured food and drink. Other causes may be a general weakness or tension in the lower abdomen which results in blocking the circulation of Qi.
Cycle irregularities
Early cycles and heavy periods are sometimes linked to excess heat accumulation which can often happen later in women’s lives towards the end of the reproductive years . It can also be diet related or a result of stress. Or it can sometimes be linked to weak Qi. Late cycles may be linked to sluggish circulation or weak Qi.
Stress often is a factor for couples who want to conceive. In addition to addressing cycle issues as described Chinese medicine may be able to assist with stress management.

Support during IVF
Many health practitioners may recommend acupuncture as an adjunct treatment that may assist with IVF treatment. There is continuing research investigating how acupuncture can assist with the effectiveness of IVF treatment. We are happy to discuss how acupuncture may be able to help.
Diet recommendations
While trying to conceive certain foods may be beneficial (both for males and females) while others are best to be avoided. This also depends on the individual constitution. We will work out your individual recommendations during your visit.
