General health problems fall in the category of Internal Medicine in Chinese medicine. Chinese Gynaecology, Chinese Dermatology and Chinese Traumatology have their own sections.
The aim of any treatment is to restore balance. This can include freeing up blocked (Qi) circulation or managing symptoms including pain, stress and fatigue related to many chronic diseases. There may be an overlap between the Chinese disease pattern and a Western medical diagnosis, but ultimately it all depends on the signs and symptoms, the Chinese diagnosis made using the pulse qualities and tongue presentation.

During a Chinese Medicine consultation your practitioner is concerned with all aspects of your health such as medical and family history, pain sensations, digestive functioning, sleeping patterns, emotional states as well as other relevant information such occupation and living conditions. A small physical examination includes palpation of the pulse at both wrists and inspection of the tongue. With the acquired information your practitioner is able to assess the Chinese medicine disease pattern and determine the most appropriate treatment for you. This makes a Chinese medical treatment very individual and is one of its great strengths.
The aim of the treatment is to restore balance. Once this is achieved the treatment is complete. Chinese Herbal treatment may take between 1-6 months. Acupuncture treatments can take from 3-12 sessions, depending on the duration of the problem. Some chronic problems may require longer treatments while acute problems may only require one visit.
